Remember, Remember the fifth of November...

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I can think of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!

In honor of November 5th, we watched V for Vendetta which I find to be an incredibly amazing film. The movie is taken from a graphic novel written by Alan Moore. The mask V (or number 5) wears in the movie is a Guy Fawkes mask. Guy Fawkes was revolutionary who planned to carry out the Gunpowder Plot on November 5th, 1605. The Gunpowder Plot was a conspiracy to assassinate King James I, however, the plot was discovered and the conspirators were captured. Guy Fawkes went to trial and was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The reason for the Gunpowder Plot? The king had extremely harsh anti-catholic laws and would persecute those who practiced Catholicism. If the government took away your freedoms, to what extremes would you go to get your rights back? Do you sit back and become a part of the mindless herd, or are you a revolutionary?

"Remember, remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot."
